Integrated Signage, Pt 3 {Memphis Edition} Example No.1

The Integrated Signage series which showcases environmental graphics that are integral to the architectural or interior language will now feature Memphis projects or Memphis design firms for AIA Memphis' Architecture month in September. There are several features of Memphis projects in the works, so I thought I would highlight one project at a time starting with one of the earlier projects that most locals are familiar with ~ MIFA Headquarters.

MIFA Headquarters / Louis Pounders* / Grinder Taber Grinder / Williams Sign / This project was an award winning renovation of the MIFA Headquarters where it was obvious that the project architect Louis Pounders was also the signage designer. The cmu block structures were built especially for each letter in the MIFA logo. The letters are mounted and lit on both sides. As quoted in an interview in Biz Journals, using the cmu blocks seemed fitting to the mission of MIFA. "I like the dignity of the humble materials," he says.

*MIFA was designed by Louis during his time at Williamson Pounders Architects. He currently works with Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects and has designed another integrated signage under ANFA to be featured later.

MIFA is located at 910 Vance Ave just east of downtown.
