Best of Neocon 2009: Table / Storage

I am currently designing tables for MODOHome so I took particular interest in table and desk designs at Neocon, especially those with conceptual leg designs. Some legs had a unique overall form and some expressed the design in its detailing.

Fave Find ~ Elegant Paper Tableware

Leave it to Japanese designers to make a product for one-time use with such beautiful simplicity. The paper tableware from WASARA is an eco-friendly line made from renewable sources such as bamboo, reed pulp, and sugarcane waste instead of wood pulp. The entire collection and my selections are below.

Coffee cup and circular plate available in 3 sizes.

Fave Find: Free Photo Editing Software ~ Great for Bloggers

I have been trying out and loving this open source software for simple editing and photo layouts that I frequently use for images I post on this blog. It automates frequent and useful editing and layout commands that Photoshop as a more custom editing program cannot offer. It is very easy to use and is well recommended for any level user.

I have not found whether it can edit the image size for custom pixel dimensions like Photoshop, but if you know of how to do it in Photoscape, let me know.

Thanks James for the link. See more free design software here.

Great for public spaces and also could be fun in kid's room or space.

I arranged a bench like this but with a much higher back for my thesis project for a public space and called it the conversation bench. I find it interesting that it causes unavoidable interaction since sitting next to someone is virtually face-to-face.

Shrimp and Wild Rice Casserole

Shrimp and Wild Rice Casserole by Paula Deen
Ingredients
1 10 3/4 ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup

1/2 onion, chopped
1/2 green bell pepper chopped
2 tablespoon butter
1 lb medium shrimp, peeled and divined
1 package wild rice
2 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
Salt and pepper

Directions
Cook the rice according to package directions minus 1/4 cup water. Let cool.

Bring 2 cups water and 1/2 tablespoon salt to a boil in a medium saucepan and cook the shrimp for 1 minute. Drain immediately and set aside.

Heat the butter in saucepan and saute the pepper and onion until soft, about 5 minutes.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

In a large bowl, combine the rice, soup, 1 1/2 cups of cheese, shrimp and vegetables. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mix well. Spray a 9 inch square aluminum cake pan or an 11 by 7 inch glass casserole dish with vegetable spray. Place the mixture in the pan and top with remaining 1/2 cup cheese. Bake for 30 minutes, until bubbly.

Yield 6-8 servings
Prep time 10 minutes
Cook time about 1 hour

O-wow #2

Well-deserving of the O-wow label is a project published in the latest issue of Architectural Record. Brand + Allen's renovation of 185 Post Street in San Francisco literally made me say "Wow!"

The architects took the 1908 masonry structure shown in the photo on the left and encased it in fritted glass box, an approach that reminds me of one of my favorite artists Christo. Instead of restoring the old or giving a "facelift" to the existing building, they have created, as indicated in the article, the effect of a large scale museum case displaying an architectural artifact.

Best of Neocon 2009: Not Your Ordinary Blinds

I love browsing through 3form materials for ideas which I only expected to showcase resin and other solid materials, so when they had this well-displayed against a wall, I had to ask the 3form exhibitor whether it was one of their products.

3form Parametre 100% Polyester 3D textile. It's a great solution to the ordinary blinds and room dividers. Many colors and 3 patterns available. For residential or commercial applications, UV treated for interior or exterior use. Click here to read more.

Best of Neocon 2009: Expandable Walls and Seating

Welcome to the first posting of my Best of Neocon 2009 series after attending the show last week in Chicago. One of the more material and space conscious designs comes from the Canadian company Molo Design.

Previous Molo exhibit showing the modular wall, furniture, and lighting system from the soft collection.

The ability to collapse, move, and create new spaces on the fly plus its simplicity caught my attention especially for retail spaces, exhibits, public spaces and even residences particularly apartments.

Softwall shown above in translucent white and opaque black.

Materials Two materials are available – textile and kraft paper.

The textile is a 100% polyethylene non-woven textile with a lightweight paper-like look and feel. The textile is highly tear, UV and water resistant; thus making it durable to handle and maintain. Available in translucent white and opaque black.

The kraft paper is an unbleached paper made with 50% recycled fibre and 50% new long fibre. The new long fibres give strength, reinforcing the smaller recycled fibre to make a stiff robust paper. Available in opaque natural unbleached brown and a deep black that has been dyed with bamboo charcoal ink.

Softwall shown above with integrated LED lighting system.
Softblock modular system shown above in natural unbleached brown.

All elements in the softwall + softblock modular system connect together with concealed magnets seamlessly.

Softseating is shown stored on shelves in collapsible form and in a couple of many possibilities for seating configurations.

Available in natural brown, white, and black. Since it is made from 100% polyethylene, it is suited for outdoor use. It is also flame retardant.
